Introduction
The Daily 5 is a series of literacy tasks that the students complete daily while the teacher meets with small groups and individuals.These tasks include reading to self, reading with someone, writing, word work and listening to reading.During the first few weeks of school we will practice, reflect and refine our skills as we begin working with the Daily 5 and before you know it we will have it mastered.

The Activities
- Read to self - Students each have a selection of "ipick" books that they read from during read to self. (ipick: Purpose-Why I want to read?, Interest-Does it interest me?, Comprehend- Do I understand it?, Know- Do I know most of the words?)
- Read to someone - Students can practice developing their fluency by reading to someone.
- Work on writing - Students work on original stories, lists, poems, thank-you notes, reminders, journal entries, important thoughts, subject notes or letters during work on writing. The students may use the journal jar, decorative papers, pens, markers, and spelling aides. Other work on writing activities include grammar, daily sentence and paragraph edits, storey starters
- Word Work- Students practice weekly spelling words using patterns, colors, fonts and games.
- Listen to reading - Students will listen to fluent reading of class novels and teacher read-alouds or by using programs such as RAZ-kids.com, tumblebooks, and storyline online.
